Subject: More Clambake!
Fun set, thanks for posting! These guys were tight (and fast!) in this era. The "occasional" panning on Past Lives went on for far too long, and gave me a headache.

By the way, the shout of "seven!" is surely to signal the band to play in a 7-count meter, i.e. tango.

Subject: Classic Clambake Unearthed!
Ok, let me tell you the genesis of this tape. It appeared during the fall semester '96 at Penn State in our GD, jam band, etc, tape-trading group, FIBK: Fifty Inspired Barton's Knights. Good times, gooooood times. Anywho I had heard of the band from a friend, and so I snatched this up right away. Been grooving to Clambake ever since.

The whole show is great, but everything from Ballerina through Square Dance has such high energy, and the banjo player (Billy, right?) just destroys! Also of note is the stage banter which is hilarious. My favs are the unexplained "Seven!" between tunes, and when Maury repeats some foods during Gumbo Gator and the band calls him on it.

The stellar playing continues on disc two with a LONG Past Lives, the Animaniac's Nations of the World, and more stage banter in the form of an impression of Ed McMahon doing Kermit the Frog ("Yes! It's not easy, being green).

The drawbacks include the sax not being mic'd properly at first, and the bass is low during a funky solo, in a similar way to the sax. There are a couple of moments of static/noise, but overall, this is one Clambake show YOU NEED. I've waited a loooooong time to get it on the archive (thanks Alex!) so please! Defect, my Russian Que.. I mean, PLEASE! download, burn, make a pin-a-nic basket(!), grab the boombox and get outside and enjoy!!

Hypnotic Clambake also played another fantastic gig in Pittsburgh on 3/14/09 (also on this archive). I'm glad the band likes the Steel City as much as I do! Come back soon!

Notes

-There is a little bit of noise in "Flop-Eared Mule" & "Old Joe Clark" on the masters
-The occasional panning back and forth during "Past Lives" is from the sound engineer at the show
-The end of "Black Forest" is cut on the cassette
-There was enough overlap on the cassettes to edit the show together seamlessly
-A small amount of Waves X-Noise was applied in Sonar to take away some tape hiss
